Meet Our Student Midwives

At New Birth Midwifery, we value the inclusion and mentoring of the future generation of midwives. Our students have been carefully screened and are enrolled in a midwifery program for the didactic portion meaning they have set goals for their clinical training with us.

We always value client feedback on student involvement and you do get many choices in your care team, however, we are confident you will love our students as much as we do!

Observe Student

This student is brand new to midwifery and/or our practice and will be sitting back to observe and learn, with very little client interaction or involvement unless invited in by the client and midwife in an encounter.

Assist Student

This student knows how to assess all maternal and fetal/infant vitals and appropriate timing during clinical visits and labor/birth. She will be more hands on and learning how to ask questions during clinical visits and will be helping to get paperwork signed, learning how to venipunture and other more advanced skills as the client is comfortable. Please know all our students first practice on us.

Primary Under Supervision Student

This student is helping with advanced skills, has been to over  25 births and is starting to learn how to do lead visits, catch babies or help to manage the birth. The midwife is right next to her helping her with those skills as she learns how to become a more independent midwife.

Once our students are very close to graduation or have graduated they will be placed in a “Mentorship Program” with New Birth and will be doing more independent skills like leading visits and doing all clinical assessments with the supervising midwife close by but not necessarily giving as much hands on support – like a residency program in hospitals. She will also be the birth assistant for our experienced midwives. This phase of training is specifically designed to help our students develop management skills in a very safe and supportive environment but lessen the amount of people in a client’s immediate space.

Many times our students are then able to transition into a staff midwife role with our team which we love because we already know we all work together very well!

Nicole (Nikki) Myer

Primary Under Supervision Student

I’m Nikki, a student midwife pursuing a degree toward CPM licensure through Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. I have completed all of my coursework and now am working my way through the last phase of my clinical experiences.

I am a mama to five beautiful, busy souls ages 11 through 3, and in July of 2023 my hubby and I will celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary. Our family lives on a small organic farm south of Mankato where we are working to grow a large portion of our food, start a market garden, and grow and gather herbs to utilize in a number of modalities.

My journey to midwifery probably started when I was expecting my first child and someone loaned me a book by Ina May Gaskin. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking about birth. The path continued winding down the rabbit hole as I went through a very difficult birth and postpartum period, and I realized that there were so many things about becoming a mom that our society doesn’t prepare us for. As our family grew, I met a number of other moms who had the same experience. We ended up choosing home birth for our other four children, and after being invited to attend a friend’s birth I was hooked on birth work. I first become a doula, but quickly realized the role I really wanted to be in was that of the midwife. When our school and daycare shut down due to covid and we had to hire someone else to fill most of my role in our business, it also ended up opening the door for me to go back to school.

When the weather is warm, you’ll generally find me outside any chance I get. Our 7500 square feet of garden space and learning everything I can about regenerative farming has become my new seasonal passion. I also love walking through the orchard we started when we moved to our farm in 2022, and using my plant identifier app to figure out what every plant on our property is (and if I can utilize it!). My kayak and motorcycle also sing their siren songs to me in the summer.

During the cold months, however, odds are I’m tucked up under blankets and as many layers of clothes as I can stand to wear! I guess it’s a good thing so many expectant mamas run warm because in the winter my hands are always freezing.

Abigail (Abby) Frick

Primary Under Supervision Student

Hey! My name is Abby Frick and I am one of the students here at New Birth! I am currently working towards being licensed as a Certified Practicing Midwife. I am in the primary and last phase of my Midwifery journey and I am hoping to sit for the board exam in 2024!

I observed my very first birth with NBM on November 18th, 2021 and officially started my internship with them January 2022! It has been an amazing opportunity being able to work with such a skilled and experienced team.

My interest in Midwifery was first peaked because of my mom. She has always had a natural mindset, especially when it comes to birth so I grew up believing that birth is a natural part of life and that homebirth is a normal way to have a baby. The more I learn about Midwifery, the more I love what it stands for. The literal meaning of Midwife is translated as “With Women”. This meaning of the word is my favorite part of the whole process; to sit with women, encourage them, and simply be “with” them in one of the most beautiful, challenging, and life-changing experiences of their lives. My longterm goal is to utilize my Midwifery skills overseas. I specifically would love to work with young girls who have found themselves pregnant and who may not know the next steps to take. I would love to walk alongside them and encourage them in their journey.

A little bit about me, I am currently planning a wedding with the man of my dreams! We are getting married September 2nd 2023 so life has been busy and full of changes but so good! My fiancé and I found a little house in Prior Lake we are going to rent with the hopes to one day buy! When I am not planning a wedding, I love enjoying the outdoors by finding new parks to explore, meeting up with a friend, or going to the beach to enjoy the (short) MN summer! I’m very excited to see what this next year will bring!

I will be taking a break from clinical and birth work to get married so you won’t see me around July and August but I will be back mid September for clinical work and start attending births again with NBM October 1st 2023.

Margaret (Meg) Flicek

Primary Student in Mentorship Role

My name is Meg, my husband of 17 years and I live on a little slice of heaven, south of Lakeville, where we home school our five kids. We enjoy the simple things in life, like eating food we are learning to grow on our property, taking hikes through the woods, fishing, or camping.

I have been one of NBM’s student midwives since January of 2022, working towards a degree as a Certified Professional Midwife with National College of Midwifery. I am nearing the end of my training and hope to sit for my exam early next year.

Before midwifery school I worked in several settings under the healthcare umbrella but for the past 13 years I have mostly served families as a birth doula and certified NFP (Natural Family Planning) instructor. My journey to midwifery began with the pregnancy of my first daughter when I was cared for so genuinely by a midwife.

I first met some of the NBM midwives when I was a doula and had the pleasure of working alongside them with a few of their clients. After graduation I plan to become licensed to practice in Minnesota.
