Paying For Care

Insurance Network Update

We are excited to announce that we are now in-network with the following insurance providers:

Minnesota Medical Assistance (Medicaid)

We understand the importance of accessible care and are actively working to expand our network. If your insurance provider is not listed, please know that we are still in the process of contracting with additional insurers. We will continue to provide updates here as new partnerships are finalized.

Insurance Networks Not Currently Available

At this time, we have been unable to secure sustainable contracts with the following insurance providers and will not be able to for the foreseeable future:
While we are not in-network with these providers, we encourage you to check with your insurance company to see if any out-of-network benefits may apply. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue working to expand our network! If you have any questions about coverage options, please contact us at billing@newbirthmidwifery.com.

Care Cost for New Birth Wellness Center

As midwives, we consider pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period as one life event and therefore the cost is not broken down by hour or visit, meaning more time with us. We offer group orientations multiple times each month. This free consultation allows you to see our space and have an opportunity to hear from our owners about the care we offer. We will also go over general financial information. When you schedule care with us, we will request your insurance/healthshare information (if applicable). We will provide you with a fee agreement which will include a retainer fee for the care we provide. We ask that clients pay a non-refundable deposit of $500 at their initial prenatal visit, with the remainder of their retainer paid in full by 36 weeks. You will receive a personalized monthly auto-payment plan as part of your fee agreement. You will have the opportunity to schedule a financial meeting with our billing team to discuss your estimate and any questions you may have. We firmly believe that no one should be turned away for an inability to pay. If you and your family have extenuating circumstances, we are happy to discuss alternate payment plans and options with you at your financial meeting. If you end up transferring out of our care, we will assess the care you received and adjust your billing or fees accordingly to determine if any refund is due.

Insured Clients

The amount you pay for your care with NBWC is determined by your deductible and co-insurance. Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance starts paying for claims. This resets every year. Your co-insurance amount is the percentage you are responsible for AFTER meeting your deductible. If your plan is not in-network with us, be sure to ask what your out-of-network benefits are, as many people find their out-of-network benefits allow them to affordably receive care with NBWC.

Our insurance billers will submit claims to your insurance, whether in- or out-of-network. We are committed to you having the best birth possible and are happy to assist you in getting your claims submitted! Insurance companies require us to bill your prenatal care globally. The global maternity fee includes your routine prenatal care as well as your labor and delivery and is billed at the time of your birth. We will submit claims to your insurance for other services throughout your care. Your baby’s care will be billed separately from yours following birth. Regardless of where your baby is born, this is also a standard billing practice. This means they will have their own fees, including facility fees at the birth center, which will be applied to their deductible. In plans with individual deductibles, your baby will have their own deductible to meet. Most insurance companies require babies be added to a plan within 30 days of birth. Be sure to provide NBWC with your baby’s insurance as soon as you have received it. If you are not able to get your baby signed up for insurance in a timely manner, the full cost of baby’s care will be billed to you as an out-of-pocket cost.

MN law requires health plans to cover routine prenatal labs. These charges MAY be applied to your deductible which will result in an out-of-pocket cost to you. Also, NBWC offers labs that we find helpful to provide excellent care to you like testing thyroid panels, vitamin D levels and a few other tests which are not always considered routine prenatal labs with each company. Each family will have time to decide what labs they choose to run. The cost of these labs, ultrasounds, and other procedures are not included in your estimate letter. At your request, we are happy to assist you in getting a cost breakdown of the labs, however it can be difficult for us to get this information from the labs, so we may not have the most up-to-date breakdown.

Although some plans may state that homebirth is covered, in Minnesota, the major insurance carriers do not cover the homebirth portion of your billing. Some of your care will be billed to insurance, while some will be billed directly to you.

Medicaid Clients

If you are a birth center client, your care will be covered based on your Medicaid plan. For most people, this means the out-of-pocket cost will be limited to fees which are not billable to insurance, including the Midwifery Concierge Fee, any out-of-radius travel fees, or use of nitrous oxide. Your fee agreement will include a full breakdown of any fees which will be billed directly to you.

We do not bill Medicaid for homebirth care at this time. If you wish to have a homebirth, we will offer you a discount off our full homebirth rate as a fully self-pay client and no billing will be submitted to Medicaid.

HealthShare Clients

We love healthsharing plans! They generally cover our services and even some complimentary ones as well!

Medi-Share operates similarly to an insurance company in how they handle billing and reimbursement. If you have Medi-Share, we will bill them directly for your care and handle any reimbursements. This simplifies the process for you significantly as you won’t need to request invoices and send them in to Medi-Share. Because we are submitting claims and handling reimbursement, we cannot offer a discounted rate for your care.

All healthshare claims submissions and reimbursements are your responsibility. Be sure to review your healthshare’s specific requirements for submissions and reimbursements and request any necessary paperwork from NBWC. This is actually a very simple process and we are happy to assist you in it.

Because we are not submitting claims or handling reimbursements, we offer healthshare clients a 40% discount off our full homebirth or birth center rate when they prepay for care. The total will depend on the exact services you receive but will be around $8,500 for a home birth and $12,500 for a birth center birth.
